Unpublished Archive: Reflections on my May 2006 China Trip

During May 2006 I spent a week in China as a speaker with a small conference group that toured Beijing, Shanghai, Wenzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The following piece was written during the weeks after my return with the intention of publishing it as an Express, but I got sidetracked by other matters and eventually decided the piece was no longer timely. After rediscovering the file and reading the text I cannot understand what made me think this piece had lost its timeliness by June 20, 2006 when I stopped working on it. I suspect I shelved the article because it had bloated into a broader discourse about the state of the world which I feared would bore my readers. It does, however, make for interesting reading nearly four years later, and, because, as a friend keeps reminding me, I did promise in print to publish these reflections, I now offer it in its unpolished originality.
