SDLRC - Region: Fennoscandia - All

The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation - Technical, Media and Corporate Articles based on Major Region - Fennoscandia
The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation is compiled by Patricia Sheahan who publishes on a monthly basis a list of new scientific articles related to diamonds as well as media coverage and corporate announcements called the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service that is distributed as a free pdf to a list of followers. Pat has kindly agreed to allow her work to be made available as an online digital resource at Kaiser Research Online so that a broader community interested in diamonds and related geology can benefit. The references are for personal use information purposes only; when available a link is provided to an online location where the full article can be accessed or purchased directly. Reproduction of this compilation in part or in whole without permission from the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service is strictly prohibited. Return to Diamond Region Index

Each article reference in the SDLRC is tagged with one or more key words assigned by Pat Sheahan to highlight the main topics of the article. In addition most references have been tagged with one or more region words. In an effort to make it easier for users to track down articles related to a specific region, KRO has extracted these region words and developed a list of major region words presented in the Major Region Index to which individual region words used in the article reference have been assigned. Each individual Region Report contains in chronological order all the references with a region word associated with the Major Region word. Depending on the total for each reference type - technical, media and corporate - the references will be either in their own technical, media or corporate Region Report, or combined in a single report. Where there is a significant number of technical references there will be a technical report dedicated to the technical articles while the media and corporate references are combined in a separate region report. References that were added in the most recent monthly update are highlighted in yellow within the Region Report. The Major Region words have been defined by a scale system of "general", "continent", "country", "state or province" and "regional". Major Region words at the smaller scales have been created only when there are enough references to make isolating them worthwhile. References not tagged with a Region are excluded, and articles with a region word not matched with a Major Region show up in the "Unknown" report.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of a study of the large Paleozoic ore-magmatic system in the northeastern Fennoscandian Shield comprising the Khibiny and Lovozero plutons, the Kurga intrusion, volcanic rocks, and numerous alkaline dike swarms. As follows from the results of deep drilling and 3D geophysical simulation, large bodies of rocks pertaining to the ultramafic alkaline complex occur at the lower level of the ore-magmatic system. Peridotite, pyroxenite, melilitolite, melteigite, and ijolite occupy more than 50 vol % of the volcanic-plutonic complex within the upper 15 km accessible to gravity exploration. The proposed model represents the ore-magmatic system as a conjugate network of mantle magmatic sources localized at different depth levels and periodically supplying the melts belonging to the two autonomous groups: (1) ultramafic alkaline rocks with carbonatites and (2) alkali syenites-peralkaline syenites, which were formed synchronously having a common system of outlet conduits. With allowance for the available isotopic datings and new geochronological evidence, the duration of complex formation beginning from supply of the first batches of melt into calderas and up to postmagmatic events, expressed in formation of late pegmatoids, was no less than 25 Ma.

Abstract: The controversial late Ediacaran to Cambrian paleogeography is largely due to the paucity and low reliability of available paleomagnetic poles. Baltica is a prime example of these issues. Previously published paleomagnetic results from a thick clastic sedimentary pile in the White Sea region (northern Russia) provided valuable Ediacaran paleontological and paleomagnetic data. Until recently, Cambrian-age rocks in northern Russia were known mostly from boreholes or a few small outcrops. A recent mining operation in the Winter Coast region exposed >60 m of red sandstone and siltstone of the Cambrian Brusov Formation from the walls of a diamond pit. Paleomagnetic data from these rocks yield two major components. (1) A single-polarity A component is isolated in ?90% of samples between 200 and 650 °C. The corresponding pole (Pole Latitutde, Plat = 20°S; Pole Longitude, Plong = 227°E, ?95 = 7°) agrees with the Early Ordovician reference pole for Baltica. (2) A dual-polarity B component is identified in ?33% of samples, mostly via remagnetization circles, isolated from samples above 650 °C. The corresponding pole (Plat = 12°S; Plong = 108°E, ?95 = 5°) is close to other late Ediacaran data but far from all younger reference poles for Baltica. We argue for a primary magnetization for the B component and the secondary origin of the other Cambrian poles from Baltica. This in turn requires a major reshuffling of all continents and blocks around the North Atlantic. The early stages of Eurasia amalgamation and models for the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt require revision.

Abstract: Metamorphic diamond in crustal rocks provides important information on the deep subduction of continental crust. Here, we present a new occurrence of diamond within the Seve Nappe Complex (SNC) of the Scandinavian Caledonides, on Åreskutan in Jämtland County, Sweden. Microdiamond is found in situ as single and composite (diamond+carbonate) inclusions within garnet, in kyanite-bearing paragneisses. The rocks preserve the primary peak pressure assemblage of Ca,Mg-rich garnet+phengite+kyanite+rutile, with polycrystalline quartz surrounded by radial cracks indicating breakdown of coesite. Calculated P–T conditions for this stage are 830–840 °C and 4.1–4.2 GPa, in the diamond stability field. The ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) assemblage has been variably overprinted under granulite facies conditions of 850–860 °C and 1.0–1.1 GPa, leading to formation of Ca,Mg-poor garnet+biotite+plagioclase+K-feldspar+sillimanite+ilmenite+quartz. This overprint was the result of nearly isothermal decompression, which is corroborated by Ti-in-quartz thermometry. Chemical Th–U–Pb dating of monazite yields ages between 445 and 435 Ma, which are interpreted to record post-UHP exhumation of the diamond-bearing rocks. The new discovery of microdiamond on Åreskutan, together with other evidence of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism (UHPM) within gneisses, eclogites and peridotites elsewhere in the SNC, provide compelling arguments for regional (at least 200 km along strike of the unit) UHPM of substantial parts of this far-travelled allochthon. The occurrence of UHPM in both rheologically weak (gneisses) and strong lithologies (eclogites, peridotites) speaks against the presence of large tectonic overpressure during metamorphism.

Lahtinen, R., Huhma, H.A revised geodynamic model for the Lapland - Kola Orogen.Precambrian Research, Vol. 330, pp. 1-19.Europe, Fennoscandia, Russia, Kola Peninsulatectonics

Abstract: The Paleoproterozoic Lapland-Kola Orogen in Fennoscandia has been studied for decades and several plate tectonic models have been proposed including one-sided subduction zone, either towards SW or NW, or two opposite-verging subduction zones before the collision. Based on new structural and isotope data from Finland and recently published data from Russia, we propose a revised tectonic model for the Paleoproterozoic Lapland-Kola Orogen. The main components are foreland in the NE followed by cryptic suture, Inari arc, retro-arc basin and retro-arc foreland in the SW. The latter three constitute the Inari Orocline. Subduction towards present SW and subsequent arc magmatism (Inari arc) started at ca. 1.98?Ga followed by voluminous sedimentation in the deepening retro-arc basin. Underplating of a mid-ocean ridge caused flat subduction and magmatic flare at 1.92?Ga over a broad distance in the retro-arc basin. Rapid heating led to melting of the retro-arc basin sediments and voluminous amounts of granulite-facies diatexites formed. During collision (D1) at 1915-1910?Ma, large thrust nappes formed on the foreland. Deformation in the retro-arc basin is seen as recumbent folding and shearing of diatexites in the lower parts of the basin and thrusting of metatextite-diatexite packages in the upper parts. A post-collisional stage is seen as 1904?Ma appinites and decompression derived granites at 1.90-1.89?Ga. Renewed shortening (D2), due to far-field effects in SW at 1.88-1.87?Ga, led to thick-skin shortening of the Archean middle crust, large-scale crustal duplexing of already cooled granulites towards the retro-arc foreland and inclined upright folding of granulites in the opposite direction towards the Inari arc. A switch in the stress field from NE-SW to NW-SE led to orogen-parallel contraction and buckling started along a dextral strike-slip fault zone to form the Inari Orocline. Buckling is seen in the bending of pre-orocline fabrics and formation of syn-orocline fabrics: radial conical folds (D3), radial fractures, a strike-slip fault zone and thrusting at the hinge zone. The end-result is a mega-scale parallel multi-layer fold composed of the Inari arc, retro-arc basin and possibly also the heated retro-arc foreland.

Abstract: Results from thermochronological studies have multiple applications to various problems in tectonics and landform evolution. However, up to now a lack of thermochronological data from the northeastern Fennoscandian Shield has complicated the interpretation of tectonothermal evolution of the region. Here, we use both new and previously published multimineral 40Ar/39Ar data (amphibole, mica, and feldspar) on the various Precambrian magmatic and metamorphic complexes to reconstruct the thermal history of NE Fennoscandia within the Kola Peninsula area in the interval 1900-360 Ma. Using the apatite fission track method as well as a numerical model of the heating?cooling process of northeastern Fennoscandia's upper crust, we have reconstructed its thermal evolution for the interval 360-0 Ma. According to our model, since Lapland?Kola orogenesis (1930-1905 Ma) northeastern Fennoscandia experienced a quasi?monotonous cooling with the average rate of ~0.15 °C/Myr, which is equal to an exhumation rate of ~1-2 m/Myr. New apatite fission track data and time?temperature modeling reveal a “hidden” endogenous thermal event in the NE Fennoscandia that took place between 360 and 300 Ma. This we attribute to an elevated geothermal gradient due to Baltica's drift over the African large low shear?wave velocity province in the lowest mantle and/or thermal blanketing by insulating Devonian?Carboniferous sedimentary/volcanic cover. Our model is further supported by evidence of Late Devonian?Carboniferous rifting in the East and South?Western Barents Basin, as well as various 360-300 Ma magmatic events within SW Fennoscandia and the Baltic countries.

Huang, Z., Yuan, C., Long, X., Zhang, Y., Du, L.From breakup of Nuna to assembly of Rodinia: a link between the Chinese central Tianshen block and Fennoscandia.Tectonics, Doi.org/10.1029/ 2018TC005471China, Europe, Fennoscandiageochronology

Abstract: The transition from breakup of Nuna (or Columbia, 2.0-1.6 Ga) to assembly of Rodinia (1.0-0.9 Ga) is investigated by means of U?Pb and Lu?Hf data of detrital zircons from three Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks in the Central Tianshan Block (CTB), NW China. These data yield six age peaks around 1.0, 1.13, 1.34, 1.4-1.6, 1.75, and 2.6 Ga. Few zircons are detected between 2.0 and 2.5 Ga. The Paleoproterozoic to Neoproterozoic detrital zircons have Hf isotopic compositions (?22.1 to +13.0) similar to those of coeval magmatic rocks in the CTB, indicating a proximal provenance. These results, together with the geological evidence and the presence of 1.4 Ga orogenic granitoids in the CTB, rule out most cratons as the CTB sources but support a Fennoscandia ancestry. Zircon U?Pb ages and Hf isotopic compositions from the CTB and Fennoscandia suggest that from 1.8 to 1.4 Ga, the ?Hf(t) values increased toward more positive values, consistent with an exterior orogen characteristic that the lower crust was replaced by a juvenile arc crust. In contrast, from 1.4 to 0.9 Ga, zircon ?Hf(t) values decreased to more negative values, reflecting an interior orogen, characterized by enhanced contribution of recycled crustal material from collided continental fragments. This marked shift most likely reflected a transition from breakup of Nuna to assembly of Rodinia, accomplished by a transformation from an exterior orogen to an interior one.

Abstract: Rapid glacio-isostatic rebound in Fennoscandia and Canada that is nonuniform in time and space indicates that there is a layer with strongly decreased viscosity at shallow crustal depths. The upper boundary of the layer is near the depth of 15 km, which corresponds to the maximum depth of earthquake hypocenters in the Precambrian cratons of the Kola Peninsula and Karelia. The position of the lower boundary is less distinct; however, most likely it is located near the base of the crust. The formation of such a layer in the Pliocene-Quaternary occurred due to infiltration of a large volume of mantle fluids into the crust. In many regions, this has led to retrograde metamorphism with rock expansion and a strong decrease in rocks viscosity.

Abstract: The comprehensive geochemical and isotopic-geochronological study of Early Proterozoic volcanic rocks in structure of the Polmak-Pechenga-Imandra-Varzuga belt and dikes and sills of the Murmansk and Kola-Norwegian terranes is conducted. Abundant swarms of mafic dikes (2.06-1.86 Ga) are established in the northwestern frame of the belt, including swarms of metadolerites (2060 ± 6 Ma), ferropicrites and gabbronorites (1983 ± 5 Ma), and poikilophitic dolerites (1860 ± 4 Ma). The comparison of volcanic rocks of the Pechenga and Imandra-Varzuga structures shows asynchronous change in volcanism style, with a significant time lapse. The geochemical features of volcanic rocks of the Tominga Formation are typical of those of continental magmatism and can hardly be correlated with those of the Pilguyarvi Formation. According to isotopic-geochronological data, depleted mantle melts in the Pechenga and Imandra-Varzuga zones intruded at 2010-1970 and 1970-1980 Ma, respectively. The analysis of the conditions of formation of volcanic series shows that Neoarchean lithospheric mantle, which produced melts with low Zr/Nb ratios, was a source for primary melts of the Kuetsjarvi Formation of the Pechenga structure and their homologs of the Imandra-Varzuga structure. In contrast, the volcanic rocks of the Kolasjoki Formation, which were weakly contaminated with crustal material, and the related Ilmozero Formation, as well as the metadolerite dikes of the Kirkenes region, were sourced mostly from asthenosphere with separation of melt above the garnet stability depth. The formation of the volcanic rocks of the Pilguyarvi Formation is related, judging from the geochemical data, to two asthenospheric sources different in depth, which produced tholeiitic and ferropicritic melts.
