SDLRC: Brooke Clements highlights technical diamond articles for September 2018

Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation
The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation is compiled by Patricia Sheahan who publishes on a monthly basis a list of new scientific articles related to diamonds as well as media coverage and corporate announcements called the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service that is distributed as a free pdf to a list of followers. Pat has kindly agreed to allow her work to be made available as an online digital resource at Kaiser Research Online so that a broader community interested in diamonds and related geology can benefit. The SDLRC Blog is a guest commentary by an industry expert about articles, themes and trends in recent issues of the SDLRC.

Comments by Brooke Clements

Brooke Clements received a B.Sc in Geology from Indiana University and an M.Sc in Economic Geology from the University of Arizona. From 1982 to 1997, he was an Exploration Geologist and Regional Manager for Exmin Corporation where he conducted diamond exploration programs throughout the United States. From 1998 to 2007 he was Vice President, Exploration for Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. Under his leadership, the Ashton-SOQUEM exploration team discovered the Renard diamond district in Quebec where Stornoway Diamonds opened the Renard Diamond Mine in 2016. From 2007 to 2015 he was President of Peregrine Diamonds Ltd. where he led the team that discovered the Chidliak diamond district on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Currently, Brooke is President of JBC Ventures Ltd., a consulting company specializing in mineral exploration and community and government relations. He is also President and CEO of Craton Minerals Ltd., a private diamond exploration company focused on discovering North America's next new diamond district.

Brooke Clements has volunteered to highlight the scientific articles that caught his attention in the monthly reference compilations. The opinions expressed are solely his and he can be reached at .

Technical Articles
June SAIMM Conference: In July, Pat included titles from a number of very interesting talks devoted to diamonds from a conference held in June by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In August she included references to some Powerpoint presentations. The extended abstracts and presentations are now available on the SAIMM website. John Kaiser has put links directly to each abstract and presentation in the section on 2018 technical references in the Diamond Resource Center.
Goldschmidt Conference: Goldschmidt, an international geochemical society, held a conference in August in Boston. There were sessions on the mantle and core, formation of the lithosphere and magmas and volcanoes. This month abstracts from 28 talks are included.
The Australian Gemmologist: This month references to 5 papers from volume 26 of the Australian Gemmologist are included, including a list of diamond bedtime reading prepared by Bram Janse.
Numerical modelling reveals weaknesses in the sagduction model for the formation of Archean continental crust: relevance to the onset of plate tectonics Arndt and Roman, ID The authors weigh into that longstanding argument about whether there was plate tectonics in the Archean and their model suggests that there was.
Formation of cratonic lithosphere during the initiation of plate tectonics Beall et al., ID This article looks to be a good discussion about the formation of thick cratonic lithosphere during the Archean.
Geology, resources and exploration potential of the Ellendale diamond project, west Kimberley, Western Australia Boxer and Rockett, ID This free download from the Government of Western Australia is an excellent summary of the Ellendale lamproite, Australia's "other" economic lamproite. The paper is part of the government's effort to reopen the mine. Expressions of interest by mining companies for the Ellendale concession are now being accepted by the government.
Diamondiferous Paleoproterozoic mantle roots beneath Arctic Canada: a study of mantle xenoliths from Parry peninsula and central Victoria Island Liu et al., ID Mineral and bulk elemental and isotopic compositions for mantle xenoliths from the Parry Peninsula and Central Victoria Island are studied along with concentrates from mineral exploration programs. Significantly diamondiferous kimberlites have been discovered in these two regions of Arctic Canada thought to be underlain by Paleoproterozoic mantle roots. They find that the xenolith mineralogy and chemistry are indistinguishable from those derived from typical Archean cratonic lithosphere.
Lithosphere thickness determination and kimberlite diamond potential Seller, ID This is a brief summary of a method to construct paleogeotherms from indicator mineral chemistry data. This paper is included in "Application of indicator mineral method to bedrock and sediments", a Geological Survey of Canada paper prepared by McClenaghan and Layton-Matthews for the Exploration 2017 conference in Toronto. It is a free download.
