SDLRC: Brooke Clements highlights technical diamond articles for August 2018

Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation
The Sheahan Diamond Literature Reference Compilation is compiled by Patricia Sheahan who publishes on a monthly basis a list of new scientific articles related to diamonds as well as media coverage and corporate announcements called the Sheahan Diamond Literature Service that is distributed as a free pdf to a list of followers. Pat has kindly agreed to allow her work to be made available as an online digital resource at Kaiser Research Online so that a broader community interested in diamonds and related geology can benefit. The SDLRC Blog is a guest commentary by an industry expert about articles, themes and trends in recent issues of the SDLRC.

Technical Articles
2017 KIC Papers: You may have noticed for the last few months that Pat has been including references to papers that were given as talks at the IKC in Botswana last September. The papers are in Mineralogy and Petrology and will ultimately be compiled into a volume that will be given to the conference participants. 14 of these papers are referred to in this month's review. June SAIMM Diamond Conference: In July, Pat included titles from a number of very interesting talks devoted to diamonds from a conference held in June by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We are hopeful that the extended abstracts from the talk will soon be available on the SAIMM website. This month, references are included for 15 of the Powerpoint presentations from the conference. Pat will work with SAIMM to see if access to the presentations can become available.
Archean continental spreading inferred from seismic images of the Yilgarn craton Calvert and Boublier, ID This deep seismic study of the Yilgarn craton looks interesting and is food for thought for the seismic analyses of other cratons.
Completely new type of diamond found in Kamchatka lava, Tolbachik Diamond Buyers International, ID The discovery of a new type of diamond at the Tolbahick volcano on the Kamchatka peninsula warrants mention. The diamonds were found in frozen lava, are 200-700 microns in size and resemble synthetic stones.
The significance of termites on the future of kimberlite exploration in Botswana Dira an Daniels, ID This paper was given in an inspired tag team talk by the authors at the 2017 IKC. The role of termites and ants in bringing KIMs to the surface has been part of diamond exploration lore related to the Kalahari and other places in the world for decades. I was lucky to hear some humorous stories on that topic told by South African geologists in the 1980s. The authors are conducting detailed studies on the role of termites in bringing indicator minerals to the surface including termite species and the optimum time of year to sample and increase your odds of finding the minerals.
Annual global summary, 2017: Kimberley Process, ID This is a link to the very valuable statistics on world rough production produced every year by the Kimberley process.
Role of trace element pedochemistry in diamond exploration, a first report from Lattavaram kimberlite cluster, Wajrakarur field, eastern Dharwar craton, southern IndiaPhani, ID Many diamond explorers have tried, usually without success, to use trace element geochemistry to find kimberlites. This study, where some elements kicked over kimberlites in India, gives us more food for thought on the topic.
